MEET AMITA
Choreographer | Storyteller | Human
Amita Batra is a story-driven choreographer with a passion for storytelling, using the human body in its totality as a medium.
Growing up, Amita formally trained in Ballet/contemporary under various teachers as well as Kathak, the Indian classical art of storytelling under her guru Smt. Shiva Mathur in Sugar Land, TX. She has had the honor to share space and learn under various gurus including contemporary exponent Kerry Nicholls, Kathak maestro Pt. Birju Maharaj & Smt. Saswati Sen.
Training in two very different styles of movement eventually led to the understanding that they both are simply different techniques or sets of definitions of body language that aim to convey what makes us all fundamentally the same: human emotion.
Therefore, Amita’s work today, be it constructing her own body language, writing & choreographing original dance films/pieces, teaching classes, or working for/with other artists in both commercial and independent spaces, aims to convey that storytelling extends beyond race, gender, age, or any other label of identity we can place upon ourselves.
